The town of Kilkee has been a holiday resort for over a hundred and fifty years, mostly catering in the early years for the well off from Limerick, but has grown since to all creeds and nationalities.
The bay of Kilkee is shaped like a horseshoe and both sides have a lot to offer, for the swimmer, the fisherman, the walker or just the plain old sunbather.
The world famous ‘cliff walk’ is on the left hand side as you look out at the Atlantic Ocean and has been a firm favourite for Kilkee people and holiday makers for well over a century.
Looking out the other side of the bay is ‘Georges Head’ which is owned by the Kilkee Golf Club and it continues to be enjoyed as a truly spectacular walk along the rugged cliffs. Also at Georges Head is the sometimes controversial and always amusing ‘Byrnes Cove’ which has had a nude sunbathing and swimming for men time immemorial. Byrnes was the subject of a novel by Michael Curtin called ‘The Cove Shivering Club’.
Add this to the prospect of walking along the sea front watching the sun go down on the last of the children as they are dragged from the beach by parents who are longing to sample the excellent cuisine, the fine beverages and the best in live entertainment. You can see why people have been coming here for generations.
